3 Key Questions to Ask Your Disability Lawyer Before Hiring
Choosing the right disability lawyer can have a significant impact on the outcome of your case. However, with so many options available, making the right decision can be challenging. Asking the right questions can help you gauge a lawyer's expertise, reliability, and commitment to your case.
However, rather than using AI to give you canned questions, we asked a SSDI specialist what he thinks you should ask. See his questions below.
1. Why Do You Do This?
Understanding a lawyer's "Why" is the most important factor in deciding which law firm to choose to help you win your disability benefits.
What should you listen for? Passion. Anger at the system. Pain over delayed and/or lost claims. A willingness to do the hard yards. Thinking outside the box.
2. Do I Have to Pay You Before We Win?
Every skilled SSDI attorney works on a purely contingent basis. That way, we are incentivized to help you win your case. It means we have skin in the game: no benefits, no legal fee. Period.
3. How Soon Will You Know What I Need to Do to Win?
Most SSDI lawyers are not prophets who can tell you the future. Therefore, you should not expect your lawyer to know what needs to be done to win your case ... until he or she reviews your medical evidence of record. The attorney also needs to review your case parameters: which type of Social Security benefits you applied for, whether you have a Date Last Insured or not, and other factors that impact what you must do to show that you are disabled and deserve benefits.
That being said, once your attorney can access your file, he or she should be able to notify you quickly about the strengths and weaknesses of your case, and provide a strategy to position you for victory.
CODA - Client References and Testimonials
If any questions remain after the ones above, then you should read the Google Reviews and website testimonials. These will give you a sense of how past clients were treated by the law firm in question. Put yourself in their shoes: is this how you want to be treated?
